The Great Wall at Simatai is a sight to behold. It is farther from Beijing and isn't as popular a Great Wall tourist destination as Badaling or Mutianyu (both of which are worthwhile to go to), however, what makes it spectacular is the mountain ridge that it is built on. When I first went there in 1999 you could go anywhere on it if you were brave enough. (The picture on the header of the blog is of a very narrow section of Simatai that is now a restricted area.) The sections that you are allowed to go on offer spectacular views of the Great Wall and the valley below. You can hike up from the bottom or take a cable car almost to the top. It's something you won't forget.
